An acoustic-electric is actually acoustic attached with magnetic pick-up and pre amp for transfering sound into speaker, the mecanism are same with you play guitar with microphone. As the result of use electronic device, it is also called electro-guitar's.
The most impresive of this instrument is you can play it as electric guitar, this ability give you more than just single type of instrument.
The pick up itself is doesn't change the resonant, it no more than just tool for changing sound into electric signal.
As the result, the body is hollow same as acoustic and don't have different at all.
The magnetic pick up usually using single coil, it change resonant sound into electric pulse, then the turn into sound by speaker. Give you more than just acoustic guitar standar
The pre amp also attached into body of guitar's itself, the power of amplifier is various, but it from 3v up to 12v. It also have setting for output, from bass, trebble and volume.
In the simple word, the acoustic-electric is guitar attached with electro component to give ability for playing this instrument with speaker.
Advantage
- Simple plug in to speaker or amplifier for playing it as electric guitar.
- The sound quality same as acoustic type.
- Inexpensive price rather than electric type
Disadvantage
- Sound quality is low than pure-electric guitars, if using as with pick up and pre amp.
- More expensive than standar acoustic guitars.
Conclusion
The acoustic-electric is alternatif for playing guitar's with speaker, it more cheap rather than electric guitar.
Also it's can playing as acoustic guitar in one instrument. But if you are need better sound quality, you must go for electric one.
